Guiding Your Child in Problem Solving and Dynamic Social ThinkingThis two hour presentation will cover the mental processes that are affected by an autism spectrum disorder and the critical nature of a parent's role in helping to remediate those core deficits. It will include a brief introduction into a Relationship Development Intervention® program as developed by Dr. Steven Gutstein and its effectiveness in improving quality of life for the entire family. Questions will be welcomed, the presentation will be interactive and include videos of typical development, as well as children overcoming the challenges this disorder presents children and families.
Janice Guice is founder of Essential Communication, Inc. in Alpharetta, Georgia. She is a licensed speech language pathologist, has worked in the public schools and in private practice and holds multiple teaching certificates in Georgia. She has presented nationally and internationally to parents about the deficits of autism and the role of parents in remediating autism. Mrs. Guice has also presented research at the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention, received ASHA's ACE award (Award for Continuing Education) and nominated two times by her peers for Teacher of the Year. She was a contributing author to My Baby Can Dance, Stories of Autism, Aspergers and Success through the Relationship Development Intervention (RDI®) Program.

Title PECS Basic Training Location Cobb Galleria Centre, Two Galleria Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30339 Date August 3-4, 2009 Time 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Description Pyramid Educational Consultants presents the PECS Basic Training This intense two-day training is designed to teach participants to appropriately implement the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). It begins with an overview of the Pyramid Approach to Education to explore the key components of designing effective educational environments. A historical overview of language training programs used with non-verbal individuals is discussed along with how to set the stage for an abundance of communication opportunities. Participants will learn how to implement the six phases of PECS, including attributes, through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role-play opportunities. Participants will leave the workshop with a fundamental understanding of how to implement PECS with individuals with autism, related developmental disabilities, and/or limited communication skills.
