Presented by
Dr. Timothy Buie, Pediatric Gastroenterologist, MassGeneral Hospital for Children; Harvard Medical School and Dr. Kay Toomey, Pediatric Psychologist, Denver, ColoradoDr. Buie will discuss how medical diagnoses can be causal for some feeding problems. He will discuss how the right medical treatment can address feeding and associated behaviors. Dr. Toomey will then give hands-on ideas and strategies for a family-centered program for assessing and treating children with feeding problems.
Dr. Tim Buie, is a pediatric gastroenterologist from MassGeneral Hospital for Children and is on the staff of Harvard Medical School. He has performed more than 500 gastrointestinal endoscopies with biopsies on children with autism. His findings show that more than half of these children had treatable gastrointestinal problems that ranged from moderate to severe including esophagitis, gastritis and enterocolitis along with the presence oflymphoid nodular hyperplasia.
Dr. Kay Toomey Ph.D is a Pediatric Psychologist who is internationally renowned for her groundbreaking work with children who are problem eaters. She developed the SOS Approach to feeding as a family-centered program for assessing and treating children with feeding problems. She also acts as a consultant to Gerber Products. Dr. Toomey helped to form The Denver Children's Hospital Feeding Clinic and Rose Medical's Pediatric Feeding Center and is currently the President and owner of Toomey & Associates, Inc.
Seminar meets the qualifications for 7 hours of continuing professional development hours for Speech-Language Pathologists or Audiologists as required by the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board. Regional Center of Orange County provider number PDP 136. CE hours have been applied for 7 hours of continuing professional development hours for Social Workers, Psychologists and Marriage & Family Therapists. This activity is co-sponsored by the County of Orange Health Care Agency.
The County of Orange Health Care Agency is an approved provider of continuing education hours for the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (provider no. PCE389) and is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Advocating for your child is often a complex and sometimes counter-intuitive process. At Law Day, parents will learn the basic concepts of special education law, the importance of strategizing and how to use this knowledge to gain control of their child's education.
It's an intensive day of training designed to get parents up to speed quickly and become a more effective advocate for their child. To facilitate this process, each participant will receive a workbook with supporting information on key concepts, selected sections of IDEA, background facts on case studies as well as recommended reading and resources.
The primary goal of Law Day: parents will become empowered IEP team members by gaining an understanding of special education law, which then can be directly applied to their child's specific needs and situation.
