3) General News

ARTICLE A:  Hit-run driver kills boy, 4

The youngster, from Anaheim, is hit as he steps into traffic after seeing his father on the other side of the street.

By JOHN McDONALD - The Orange County Register

A 4-year-old autistic
Anaheim boy was killed Monday night when he was struck by a hit-run driver while crossing four-lane Whittier Boulevard, Whittier police said.
Christian Castillo had been with relatives at a restaurant near the intersection of
Whittier Boulevard and First Avenue when the accident took place at about 10:18 p.m., police said.

Investigators said it appeared the boy was leaving the restaurant with family members when he saw his father on the opposite side of the street. He stepped out into traffic and was hit by an older-model, dark-colored Ford F-150 pickup. The driver did not stop and
was last seen headed west on
Whittier Boulevard, police said.

A passerby drove the youngster and his father to
Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier, where attempts to revive the child failed. He was pronounced dead at 11 p.m.

Police are seeking the driver, and the truck, which is believed to have front-end damage.
Anybody with information on the case is asked to call
Whittier police at (562) 945-8255.

ARTICLE B:  GREGG, HARKIN INTRODUCE BILL TO HELP INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

WASHINGTON-Sen. Judd Gregg, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, and Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) today introduced a bill to improve and extend federal programs that help individuals with disabilities to access services and devices.
The Assistive Technology Act Reauthorization would provide funds, improve access and foster better systems for administering the program. Assistive technology is generally defined as any kind of device or service that assists persons with disabilities in performing day-to-day tasks and activities.
"This program is a relatively small program, but to those who benefit, it can be life-changing," Gregg said. "Individuals with a range of disabilities - from hearing loss to motor skill impairment - can with a small amount of individualized assistance, have the opportunity to lead fuller, more productive lives. This bill improves access to assistance by fostering public-private partnerships, improving access to technology and stabilizing state funding streams so devices and services are within reach of individuals with disabilities."
"Assistive technology opens doors of opportunity for persons with disabilities and advances the promise of the ADA," said Harkin. "This bill will ensure that people with disabilities and older Americans know about assistive technology and can use it on the job, in schools and in their homes and communities. Our legislation invests in technology and those who truly need it."
The Assistive Technology Act of 2004:
- Strengthens the existing successful state Assistive Technology programs.
- Authorizes additional resources so each state will receive $500,000 minimum for the state program and $50,000 minimum for protection and advocacy services. - Ensures that technology will be available where people need it - in schools, on the job and in the community - by refocusing training and technical assistance and emphasizing the provision of assistive technology devices and services.
- Requires programs to provide device demonstration, equipment loan, device reutilization/recycling and financing systems such as low interest loan programs.
- Focuses training and technical assistance to improve service planning for individuals with disabilities and ensure that service providers have information on assistive technology. - Requires states to focus on one of three target populations: students with disabilities and educators, adult service provider clients and providers, or employees and employment providers. This aligns the AT Act with recent federal priorities, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the Workforce Investment Act and the Americans with Disabilities integration mandate in Olmstead. - Provides supplemental grants for alternate finance programs and equipment loan programs. - Authorizes projects of national significance to increase public awareness, encourage research and development, and improve personnel preparation on assistive technology issues. - Improves technical assistance, data collection, and the public internet site. - Authorizes a comprehensive national study of the assistive technology industry.

ARTICLE B:  Vaccine Links To Autism?

June 22, 2004
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/06/22/eveningnews/main625458.shtml

(CBS) Because Alex Donnelly is autistic, he can't communicate normally or lead a normal life.

Yet he has some amazing abilities. When asked what the capital cities of Turkmenistan and Venezuela are, he can answer "Ashkerbad" and "Caracas" accurately.

His father claims Alex wasn't autistic - until he got certain vaccinations containing a mercury preservative.

As kids got more and more vaccines over the years, more mercury came with them - in amounts way over safety limits. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has long claimed it's not the cause of autism or related disorders, and mercury is still in flu shots recommended for babies this fall.

But now, a landmark study by Dr. Mady Hornig, from the Mailman School Of Public Health, Columbia University, is adding to the mercury worries, as CBS News Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson finds out.

Hornig injected a strain of mice with genetic tissues similar to those found in children with mercury-laden vaccines equivalent to what kids got in the 1990's. The mice developed profound brain problems.

So what types of behavior did Hornig see in the mice, and how does that compare with what we call autism? Dr. Hornig answers, "All sorts of strange behaviors that were repetitive in nature, where animals would just keep repeating the same behavior in a very stereotyped fashion."

It wasn't just repetition -- the mice withdrew from their surroundings like autistic children. They resisted change and developed brain abnormalities affecting emotion and thinking, also like autistic children.

Alex's father, Jim Donnelly, says it only confirms what he's believed all along: most kids aren't harmed by mercury in vaccines; they shed it naturally, but some retain it, and it poisons their brains.

Says Donnelly, "When (Alex's) testing came back, he had mercury levels that were 20 times the EPA safety margin residing in his body. It was unbelievable."

Other scientists and the CDC dispute such a link. But if it's true, hundreds of thousands of American kids could be living with the fallout. And the results could be devastating to vaccine makers and federal health officials who have steadfastly defended the use of mercury, a potent neurotoxin, in childhood vaccines.

ARTICLE C:  Locals learn the dangers of vaccinations – Arizona City News

By the time a child is six months old, they are to be injected with 45 vaccines; at 18-months, 64; and at four to six years old, at least 74 vaccines. Yet, there is no proof that vaccinated children are healthier than non-vaccinated children. No major study has ever compared groups of vaccinated and non-vaccinated children to determine which is healthier. While millions of dollars are spent each year testing shampoos and cosmetics for carcinogenicity (before they are allowed to be sold to the public), vaccines are not tested for their ability to cause cancer, mutations or developmental malformations.

Startling evidence continues to pile up each year which indicates that vaccines do more harm than good. According to the US government's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, outbreaks have occurred in populations that were 100 percent vaccinated. Furthermore, no less than 80 percent of cases of measles are contracted in vaccinated people.

But what is in a vaccine? In addition to living and killed bacteria, viri and their toxins, children are injected with some of the most lethal poisons known. This includes formaldehyde, mercury, aluminum, phenol (carbolic acid), borax (ant killer), ethylene glycol (antifreeze), dye, acetone, latex, MSG, glycerol, polysorbate and sorbitol to name just a few.

Mercury, which is still in use today, is one of the most poisonous substances known to exist in nature. In recent years, children have received up to 125 times the safe limit of mercury set by the EPA, and the symptoms of mercury toxicity resemble those of autism. Data from the CDC's (Centers for Disease Control) own records indicates that the risk of autism is 27 times greater if a child has been immunized with thimerosal-containing vaccines.

A 2003 study from the International Journal of Toxicology showed that hair samples among a group 94 autistic children had mercury levels 1/8 that of a group of 45 normal children. The lower the level of mercury, the worse the autism. Autistic children cannot get rid of the mercury so it may accumulate in their brains 18-month-old children.

More and more links are being made between vaccinations and increased cases of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), ADD, ADHD, autism, infantile seizures and others. According to Doctor Harris L. Coulter, "'Crib death' was so infrequent in the pre-vaccination era that it was not even mentioned in the statistics, but it started to climb in the 1950s with the spread of mass vaccination." Furthermore, the number of 2 to 4-year-olds taking psychiatric drugs like Ritalin and Prozac soared 50 percent between 1991 and 1995. These results are troubling since the long-term safety and effects of these drugs on a child's developing brain are largely unknown.

Nearly 90 percent of the total decline in mortality rates (from scarlet fever, diphtheria, whooping cough and measles) between 1860 and 1965 occurred before the introduction of antibiotics and widespread immunization.

What are the Real Numbers?

By December 2002, VAERS received 244,424 reports of possible reactions to vaccines. This number includes 99,145 emergency room visits, 5149 life-threatening reactions, 27, 925 hospitalizations, 5775 disabilities and 5309 deaths.

More parents are rejecting vaccinations for their children, for a number of reasons. For increasingly more logical reasons, many parents are beginning to consider the vaccines more dangerous than the disease. Additionally, they prefer natural rather than artificial immunity. A growing number of parents have a vaccine-injured child. Furthermore, many parents have religious or philosophical objections to vaccinations.

Arizona statutes allow a parent to avoid vaccinating their child simply by signing a personal belief exemption. (This absolutely allows children to attend all public schools, etc.) A school nurse is required by law to provide the exemption form at the parent's request. Forms are also available at Arizona City Family Chiropractic.
