Approximate number of attendees: 850
Editorial: This was a great conference. What made this conference difference is the fact the conference was FREE (with a request for a donation.) Kirkman Labs did a lot to sponsor and get this conference off the ground. It was well done and very well respected with the Oregon community. All the speakers donated their time for this conference and waived rights to the audio and video. It was all about giving. It is a very tight nit community with a lot of assistance available in new parent conferences, referral sources. In other words, it was very organized (unlike Southern California!)
Speakers:
- Dr. Bernard Rimland
- Dr. Andrew Wakefield
- Dr. Jon Pangborn
- Karyn Seroussi
- Dr. Jeff Bradstreet
Lynn Hamersley introduced the conference. She is the director of the Northwest Autism Board. Their focus is on the following:
- Parent Training (available 3 times a year)
- Work with local colleges for research and therapists training (Warner Pacific College and Western Oregon University.)
- Medical clinic in Oregon to support families with children with autism
Dr. Bernard Rimland Autism Research Institute
- He has been fighting the medical community since the beginning. They have been ignoring and hiding from autism rather than trying to help these children and find a cure.
- Super vitamins (like B6) cannot be copyrighted therefore the pharmaceutical companies cannot make money on them. That is why supplements are being played down by the medical community and they are saying they are not effective.
- There has been 18 studies regarding these supplements vs. toxic drugs and each study shows proof that the vitamins work better than the drugs. See the autism.com/ari web site for details.
- When using B6 - magnesium most also be supplemented
- Other Bs to try DMG and TMG
- There are over 35 vaccines given to children before they enter school. He feels this is an overload to the immature immune system.
Dr. Andrew Wakefield Royal Free Hospital UK www.ucl.ac.uk/medicine/gastroenterology
- What is the problem with these kids? Dr. Wakefield’s hypothesis is a link between the gut and the brain. He feels this way because most of the children with autism studied had significant bowel issues.
- Complexity and perception of the childs problem(s) start with a clinical history and information from the parent. Most doctors overlook the parents and he feels this is where he has learned the most.
- A Typical Characteristics of the ASDs:
- Regression from a period of normal childhood development
- associated features ataxia and gait disturbances
- child becomes encephalapathic
- gastorial intestinal symptoms
